Shipping from China to USA: The Complete 2026 Guide

The US is one of the largest destinations for Chinese exports. But the process involves customs regulations, tariffs, and documentation requirements that can be overwhelming for first-time importers. This guide walks you through everything you need to know.

Step-by-Step Process

01

Choose Your Shipping Method

Sea freight (LCL/FCL) for large shipments, air freight for urgent/small cargo, express courier for parcels under 50 kg.

02

Get Your HS Code

Every product needs an HS code for US customs. Use our free HS Code Finder or consult a customs broker.

03

Prepare Documentation

Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading (sea) or airway bill (air), and any required certificates.

04

Calculate Duties & Taxes

US import duties vary by product and HS code. Check the USITC tariff schedule. Section 301 tariffs may apply to Chinese goods.

05

Arrange Customs Clearance

Hire a licensed US customs broker (required for commercial shipments over $2,500). They file the ISF and entry documents.

06

Arrange Final Delivery

From US port to your warehouse or Amazon FBA. Drayage, deconsolidation, and trucking.

Section 301 Tariffs

Since 2018, the US has imposed additional Section 301 tariffs on many Chinese goods, ranging from 7.5% to 25% (and higher for some categories). These are on top of the standard MFN duty rates.

Always check the current tariff status for your specific HS code before finalizing your import costs. The USTR maintains the official list of affected products.

ISF Filing (10+2 Rule)

US Customs requires an Importer Security Filing (ISF) at least 24 hours before cargo is loaded on a vessel bound for the US. Your customs broker handles this, but you need to provide accurate cargo details in advance.

Late or inaccurate ISF filings can result in fines of up to $10,000 per violation and cargo holds.

Amazon FBA Specifics

If shipping to Amazon FBA, you need additional preparation: FNSKU labels on each unit, carton labels, and compliance with Amazon's packaging requirements. I offer FBA prep services at my Shanghai and Shenzhen warehouses.
